On June 19, 2023, Dr.-Ing. Fabian Key from the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics at the Vienna University of Technology presented on "Uncertainty Quantification with Surrogate Models for Plastics Flow in Manufacturing Engineering" as part of the Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) research colloquium. The subsequent discussion and Q&A session confirmed the great interest of the audience members in the exciting talk.

Our colleagues Max Firmbach and Dr.-Ing. Matthias Mayr have attended the Xth International Conference on Coupled Problems in Science and Engineering, which was held in Chania/Crete, Greece on June 5-7,2023, and have presented research findings from IMCS.

In this preprint, we propose a fully coupled partitioned scheme to embed fibers (modeled by beams) into three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow. The discretization of the truly 1D/3D coupling constraints utilizes a mortar-type approach and a penalty regularization. We solve the coupled problem by either an Aitken acceleration scheme or by a Matrix-Free Newton-Krylov (MFNK) approach.

Two new conference proceedings contributions on "Hybrid Digital Twins: A Proof of Concept for Reinforced Concrete Beams" and "Computational challenges in mixed-dimensional beam/solid coupling" have been published in Proceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.

In the week from 8 to 12 May 2023, Thomas Apel was a guest in Gijón (Spain) hosted by Mariano Mateos, a renowned specialist in discretisation methods for optimisation problems with partial differential equations.

Alessandro Reali from the University of Pavia gave an inspiring talk on "Some advances in isogeometric analysis of coupled and complex problems" as part of the research colloquium Computational Science and Engineering (CSE).

IMCS co-organizes the 2023 European Trilinos User Group meeting to bring together the European user and developer community of the Trilinos project.

From March 13 to 17, our colleague Philipp Zilk was a guest of Serge Nicaise, one of the most renowned scientists in the field of theoretical and numerical analysis of partial differential equations.

On March 8, 2023, the kick-off workshop "HPC in the Bundeswehr" took place at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. Embedded in the dtec.bw-funded project "hpc.bw: Competence Platform for Software Efficiency and High Performance Computing", the workshop aimed to bring representatives of the two universities of the Bundeswehr as well as various departments of the Bundeswehr into conversation with each other and to offer an exchange forum on the possibilities and needs for high performance computing (HPC) in the Bundeswehr.

Sebastian Brandstäter co-organizes the minisymposium "Current Trends in Modelling and Simulation of Biological Systems: Numerics, Application and Data Integration" at the 10th GACM Colloquium in Vienna, Austria, September 10-13, 2023.

The IMCS participated for the first time this year in the Advanced International School at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, represented by our PhD student Martin Frank. Leading experts taught the still young researchers from fundamental concepts to the latest research results in the broad field of biomechanics.

IMCS participated in the "1st German Workshop on Next-Generation Software Development in Computational Mechanics", which took place in the TUM Akademiezentrum Raitenhaslach on February 1-3, 2023.

On November 22 and 23, 2022, the Research Days of the Simulation Group of IMCS sucessfully took place in Herrsching am Ammersee for the second time.

Within the research project "hpc.bw - Competence Platform for Software Efficiency and Supercomputing", Dr. Matthias Mayr and Max Firmbach visited our project partners at the HSU/UniBw H campus in Hamburg.

Within the framework of dtec.bw, the two universities of the Bundeswehr cooperate in research on the digitalization of bridges. To strengthen joint research and communication between the disciplines, the "Digital Bridge" doctoral student meeting took place from November 17th-19th 2022 in Munich.

This year's European Trilinos User Group (EuroTUG) meeting took place on September 12 - 14, 2022. After a pause of three years, the EuroTUG 2022 offered an interactive forum for Europe-based users and developers of the Trilinos project.
