Trajectory Adjustments via Grey Wolf Optimization to Mitigate Air Traffic Complexity in Moving Sectors
S Göppel, E Asadi, M Schultz (under submission)

Air traffic flow management is currently based on sector-based approaches. Moving sectors enable flow-centric management with enhanced airspace capacity, as controller workload is dynamically allocated according to traffic conditions. To balance the controller workload, the traffic complexity within the moving sector is optimized through trajectory adjustments, including minor modifications to lateral flight paths. In two case studies, a Grey Wolf Optimization approach achieves a 27 % reduction in average air traffic complexity compared to the original traffic scenario in the moving sector.
