IMCS visit and colloquium lecture by Serge Nicaise
9 December 2024
As part of the Colloquium for Applied Mathematics, Prof. Dr Serge Nicaise from the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France gave a successful lecture entitled "A posteriori goal-oriented error estimators based on equilbrated flux and potential reconstructions" on Thursday, 5 December 2024. The lecture was the highlight of the renowned mathematician's week-long visit to our institute. Together with colleagues at the IMCS and the university, he worked on various problems in applied mathematics, his expertise always contributing significantly to the successful progress of the projects. This was a continuation of the long-standing cooperation between Prof. Thomas Apel and Prof. Serge Nicaise, which has already resulted in over 10 publications.
In his colloquium lecture, Serge Nicaise highlighted error estimates for elliptical and parabolic problems, in which the calculation of specific variables - based on engineering problems and represented by linear functionals - is of particular interest. The focus was on the application of numerical methods, such as the discontinuous Galerkin method and the finite volume method. The theoretical results were underpinned by numerical examples.
After the lecture, the participants had the opportunity to ask questions, which were answered in detail by Prof Nicaise. The evening came to a successful conclusion with excellent Bavarian cuisine in a convivial atmosphere.
We would like to thank Serge Nicaise for his visit and his contribution to the colloquium. We are already looking forward to his next visit and to further lectures at the colloquium.
