Max Firmbach visiting Sandia National Laboratories
26 November 2024
Our colleague Max Firmbach is currently on a research visit at the Computer Science Research Institute (CSRO) of the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from September to December 2024. During his stay, Max is working with leading scientists on projects in high-performance computing on smoothed-aggregation algebraic multigrid methods for highly anisotropic and heterogeneous materials. Traditional multigrid methods lack a proper handling of the material information and thus converge slowly. The new approach incorporates the material information into the coarsening process for the coarse level construction and thus yields robustness and ease-of-use in the prescribed scenarios.
This visit provides an exceptional platform for international collaboration, allowing Max to exchange ideas, refine methodologies, and contribute to innovations that could have a far-reaching impact on scientific computing. His work at Sandia underscores his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and fostering global partnerships, and strengthens the relationship between IMCS and one of the United States' premier research institutions.
Outside of work, Max enjoys exploring the Albuquerque area, known for its rich culture and stunning natural beauty. He has also taken to the nearby ski slopes to indulge his passion for winter sports. This mix of professional development and recreational adventure makes his visit both productive and memorable.
We wish Max a great rest of his research visit and hope to welcome him back in best shape!
