The Application of Named Entity Recognition (NER) in Military Intelligence
Prof Uwe Borghoff, former director of the Center for Intelligence and Security Studies (CISS), presented the paper "The Application of Named Entity Recognition (NER) in Military Intelligence" at the 19th International Conference on Computer Aided Systems Theory. The paper, which was written in collaboration with Christian Nitzl, Achim Cyran and Sascha Krstanovic, shows how Named Entity Recognition (NER) can be used to identify times, places, organisations and people in documents. The study uses an experiment to test the potential added value of NER in the military analysis process. The results of the experiment show on the one hand that there is a clear added value through artificial intelligence in military information processing. On the other hand, it shows that the added value can be further increased through better labelling, especially for NER.
