Dr. Robert Schwarz is a member of the SPACE research center and the leader of the Satellite Networks and Waveforms research group.
Satellite communications systems are an integral element of complex communication infrastructure, and society today is inconceivable without them. They already perform important tasks like broadcasting TV signals and transmitting voice and video messages as well as providing internet access parts of the world which are difficult to access, which lack terrestrial infrastructure, or where this infrastructure would be too expensive. In addition, mega-constellations consisting of up to several thousand low-orbiting satellites will ensure global internet access and the connection of millions of devices with the Internet of Things. The integration of such systems into already existing networks and into future terrestrial communication infrastructure is essential for the success of such projects and for the acceptance of new services by users. Modern mobile communication standards already allow for such non-terrestrial networks. For users, the boundary between terrestrial mobile communication and satellite-based radio communication is becoming increasingly blurred.
Dr. Robert Schwarz is the leader of the Satellite Networks and Waveforms research group at the Institute of Information Technology and is studying innovative solutions for signal processing and the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks for future satellite systems.
