The Institute of Space Technology and Space Applications is actively researching in several fields. The main research areas are Signal Design, Sensor Fusion, Space Navigation, Testbed, Receiver Simulator as well as some cross-over actions. More details can be found below.

GNSS Signal Design

GNSS signal design is a core research area of the institute. The institute has been involved in the signal-in-space (SIS) definition of the first Galileo generation (G1G) and its optimization phase. Current activities are focused in the signal definition of the second Galileo generation (G2G).

Positioning solutions for automotive applications

The institute accesses a broad variety of different sensors, e.g. LiDARs, RADARs, IMUs, GNSS receivers, cameras and tachymeters to develop and improve specific Position Navigation Timing (PNT) solutions for future mass market as well as Safety of Life applications.

Space Navigation

In the field of space navigation, the institute mainly investigates the autonomous navigation of spacecraft. In deep space, GNSS is not available, thus, positioning and navigation of spacecraft needs to be carried out by on-board sensors.

Testbed

The GNSS Testbed of ISTA provides the capability of recording and transmitting signals in the L-Band. The flexibility is very high, so that new GNSS signals and RF interference tests can be carried out with UAVs as a kind of simulated satellites.

The GNSS Receiver and Simulator Group is working on the institutes sophisticated software GNSS receiver MuSNAT, formerly known as IpexSR.

Smartphone Positioning

The Research group dedicated to Smartphone positioning covers a wide range of research activities starting from Smartphone GNSS Antenna phase center estimation, GNSS raw measurement analysis, Android Application development for logging GNSS and IMU data, and Smartphone GNSS/IMU fusion.
