Assistance systems for lateral control have several objectives:
- supporting the driver (lane keeping assist),
- increasing safety during lane changes and passing maneuvers (lane change assist),
- supporting the driver in evasive maneuvers to avoid obstacles (collision avoidance support system or automatic avoidance).
The extent and duration of the support increases with the degree of automation (see SAE J3016). At the same time, however, the driver’s situational awareness decreases, meaning they are insufficiently prepared to take over lateral control with the steering wheel when the system fails or reaches its limits.
The projects Aktiv-IQF and UR:BAN (funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy) have devoted several subprojects to these issues (urban-online.org).
Within the scope of these projects, several tests were conducted to examine the design of collision avoidance systems under these aspects.
