Participation in the "Conflict & Change" PhD Workshop at University College London (UCL)
4 March 2025
From February 24 to 25, 2025, the seventh Conflict & Change PhD Workshop “Studying Peace and Conflict in Tumultuous Times” took place at University College London (UCL). The annually organised workshop offers young researchers in the field of peace and conflict studies the opportunity to present their research and PhD projects, receive detailed feedback from leading conflict researchers and exchange with other early career researchers.
In addition to the Universität der Bundeswehr München, Bocconi University, University of Cambridge, Durham University, ETH Zürich, University of Essex, University of Hamburg, King's College London, London School of Economics, Lund University, University of Oslo, University of Oxford, Pennsylvania State University and Stanford University were also represented at UCL.
The research topics presented at this year's conference covered a broad spectrum in the research field - from alliances in armed conflict and local leaders in peace processes, to transitional justice and international criminal law proceedings in conflict resolution, to the role of social media and digital space in conflict. The country contexts of the studies presented encompassed conflicts all over the world - from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Norway to Ethiopia, Nigeria, Guatemala and Brazil.
This year, Lena Runge, research associate at the Centre for Crisis Early Warning, presented and discussed her PhD project receiving valuable feedback and suggestions during the workshop. The project deals with withdrawals of international peace missions and their influence on the dynamics of violence in the so-called host country.
