Dr. Julian Fietkau
Julian Fietkau has been employed as a research associate at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich since April 2016. His field of activity until the end of 2020 was the UrbanLife+ project, in which he worked on the technical design of urban spaces to promote the participation and quality of life of older adults. Since 2021, he has been working in the HoPE project on long-term research into the social behavior of people in front of public displays, as well as on the methods and tools needed for related data collection.
Previous History
Julian Fietkau studied at the University of Hamburg from 2007 to 2015, where he first completed a B.Sc. in Computer Science and then a B.Sc. in Human-Computer Interaction and an M.Sc. in Computer Science in a double degree program. In his final theses he worked on an innovative teaching concept for software design patterns, on the development of a grading report software for high school graduates according to User Centered Design, and on the perception of artificial avatars in social contexts in virtual reality environments. In parallel, he worked for several years as a student assistant in teaching and developed, among other things, a concept for rapid prototyping of various interaction concepts in HCI teaching, which was well received at the national conference Hochschuldidaktik der Informatik 2014.
Right after graduation, he moved to Weimar and worked for one year at Bauhaus University as a research assistant in HCI in the team of Prof. Dr. Eva Hornecker. In addition to his role in undergraduate HCI teaching, he led the master's degree project Exploring Interaction and Evaluation through Game Design. The results include a team-based computer game that was controlled by tilting and shaking a water bottle, and its empirical evaluation with respect to the player experience.
