FS4Africa aims to enhance African systems for achieving food safety—placing special emphasis on the informal sector—through local market transformation. This transformation will improve food safety and regional trade while minimizing negative impacts on the environment, biodiversity, health, and society. The project’s key objectives are: (1) Achieving a better understanding of food safety's role by analyzing the enabling environment, local value chains, and case studies that provide data and insights into actors in the informal sector. (2) Developing governance strategies, business concepts, and tools to reshape local markets, enhance food safety in the informal sector, and explore potential integration into formal food systems. (3) Co-developing and co-designing solutions and business cases for food safety through multi-stakeholder approaches. (4) Incubating, accelerating, and scaling solutions via a network of innovation hubs. (5) Assessing the impacts of food safety solutions and their risks on food security, the circular economy, sustainability, and biodiversity. (6) Embedding food safety solutions into strategic agendas and policies.
