Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stephan Ulrich

has been Professor of Design and Mechatronics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering since October 2024.

Stephan Ulrich studied physical engineering at Technische Universität Berlin and then completed his doctorate at the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) on novel actuators based on electrorheological fluids for active vibration decoupling. From 2010 on, he also headed a working group at the Chair of Machine Elements and Technical Logistics as a senior engineer, focusing on drive systems for automation in logistics and production.

One aim of Prof. Ulrich's research is to find solutions to practical problems that improve products or enable new types of products for industrial use. In 2015, he co-founded a start-up that initially developed and marketed autonomous steering systems for transport vehicles for production logistics and later on elastic handling systems.

Following his appointment to the Chair of Design and Mechatronics at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Prof. Stephan Ulrich will continue his work on mechatronic drives. His particular research interest lies in the development of modular actuator-sensor systems for ‘soft robotics’. These are robots and handling systems that are particularly suitable for direct interaction with humans due to their flexible structure. Promising future applications lie in service and care robotics as well as in the possibility of creating cheaper and more flexible automation solutions for small companies.

Welcome, Prof. Ulrich!
