Sensor systems are one of the most important drivers of digitalization. The VITAL-SENSE project will encourage this development and make an important contribution.
Progress in the field of digitalization, such as the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence of things (AloT) and artificial intelligence (AI), is already having a large influence on people’s lives and society. New technologies and methods of evaluating and providing information will bring change to all areas, for example health, autonomous mobility, building technology, and environmental monitoring. Sensor systems are an interface between the analog and the digital world and will play a decisive role in this development. An interdisciplinary approach is required in order to meet these challenges.
For this reason, the Integrated Sensor Systems Research Center at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich is conducting the pilot project VITAL-SENSE from 1 October 2020 to 31 December 2024. This project is funded by the dtec.bw – Digitalization and Technology Research Center of the Bundeswehr.
Holistic Monitoring of Vital Functions
The aim of this project is to develop hardware and software for implementing and testing integrated sensor systems that are used to monitor vital functions. Specifically, the aim is to develop solutions for mobile chemical and biological sensors that can analyze exhaled air and body fluids. The focus is on 2D sensors and nanolayers. While there are existing commercial sensors for vital functions, this approach provides a detailed picture of the subject’s health.
The interdisciplinary approach used by VITAL-SENSE encompasses applications from a wide variety of areas such as stress monitoring, fatigue, and acute conditions. The applications in civilian and military areas are numerous. Solutions can be developed for Bundeswehr-specific applications in close cooperation with troops. Such considerations are of major importance for the Bundeswehr. This project can directly benefit future concepts, e.g. for the Medical Service, autonomous systems, and the safety of soldiers and civilians.
