The BMBF-funded junior research group iCFD4NS contributes to completing the nuclear safety analysis chain. The thematic orientation is both needs-based and future-oriented, i.e. the selected applications or phenomena relate to novel reactor concepts, in particular SMR, as well as to large light water reactors currently in operation. Specifically, it is about improving CFD simulations for multiphysics problems with a pronounced multiscale nature, i.e. generally turbulent, multiphase, non-isothermal and reactive flows. This is realized by means of a hierarchical approach to model the various flow phenomena and by using modern, innovative methods (high-performance computing, artificial intelligence). Depending on the availability of appropriate experiments, the validation of the simulation methods is carried out in an application-oriented manner.
