Our institute has an extensive test laboratory for structural mechanical investigations. With the help of different test systems, a wide range of tests with different speed ranges, test types and most specimen and component dimensions can be covered. In addition to testing according to the relevant standards, individually adapted test methods are very often used, which are specifically tailored to the phenomena to be investigated.

Static and cyclic test systems

The focus of static and cyclic testing is a multi-channel servo-hydraulic testing system of the latest technical standard. With the help of different test benches and a large selection of different cylinders (from 10kN to 1000kN), an individual setup adapted to the respective requirements can be realized. Experimental testing can be performed at various scales from coupon and element level (material characterization and validation) to component testing. Typically, structures made of metals, polymers and fiber composite materials are tested.

Dynamic test systems

The investigation of the structural dynamic behavior (e.g. eigenmodes, operating vibration modes) of components is carried out on electrodynamic vibration systems. With the shakers available at the institute (force range up to 20kN), excitation in a frequency range up to approx. 2000 Hz is possible. With the help of a digital image correlation system or a laser scanning vibrometer the corresponding vibration modes can be visualized and evaluated.

Manufacturing Technologies

Various facilities are available to the Institute of Lightweight Structures for the production of specimens and components made of various technical materials. The focus is on additive manufacturing technologies and the conventional production of fiber composite materials. Our own institute workshop enables machining production as well as adaptation of all test setups and fixtures required for experimental investigations.

Measurement & Data Acquisition

At the Institute of Lightweight Structures, both conventional and novel methods are used to measure relevant physical quantities. For the execution and evaluation of experiments of all kinds, our laboratory has a wide range of modern measurement technology and sensors at its disposal.
