"Covert channels on mobile devices - gyroscopes and more"

Covert channels allow to transmit data between a sender and a receiver
over a channel that was never intended for data transmission and that
is hidden from plain sight. We investigate the construction of several
covert channels on smartphones that emerge due to the use of advanced
sensors and actuators, such as gyroscopes. Furthermore, we discuss a
range of attacks utilizing covert channels, ranging from data exfiltration
out of "air-gapped" computer systems to user tracking.

Biography:

Stefan Katzenbeisser is a professor for Computer Engineering at the University
of Passau. His main research interests lie in system security, in applied
cryptography and in critical infrastructure protection. He holds a Ph.D. in
computer science from the Vienna University of Technology. Prior to joining
Passau, he held a chair for Security Engineering at Technische Universität
Darmstadt and was a Senior Scientist at Philips Research.
