Building an UniBw AI network
The UniBw AI Retreat aka GCMC-UniBw AI/ML PhD & Policy Workshop aims to provide doctoral students in machine learning and artificial intelligence with a platform for technical and applied-level exchange and networking.
Public sector researchers have the possibility to engage with AI PhD students to exchange insights on methodologies and real-world applications.
This retreat offers a space for presenting research and gathering feedback while facilitating discussions with domain experts in security studies. It encourages a fruitful exchange of ideas and perspectives, supported by a series of specialized lectures that bridge the fields of AI and security.
Additionally, the event includes an advanced tutorial on the PyTorch framework for advanced users and experts. There will also be an Open Science course to improve research project organization and to learn reproducible research best practices.
The retreat will conclude with a panel discussion on "Artificial Intelligence and Global Security."
Also have a look at the Machine Learning Interest Group: we organize regular meetings at the UniBw M. More at. Please send questions to philipp.roesch@unibw.de.
The event is organized by the Institute of Distributed Intelligent Systems and dtec.bw Innovation Center in cooperation with the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. GCMC is a bilateral center of the United States Department of Defense and the German Federal Ministry of Defense for security and defense policy. It is the only center of its kind outside the USA.

Detailed Agenda
Poster Presentation
The retreat also includes an opportunity to present your research. A poster presentation will be held for this purpose.
- We have planned three sessions, 45 minutes each: PhD students will present during one of them and attend the others as an audience member. Senior Researchers and Security Authority Participants provide feedback and can ask critical questions.
PhD students/"Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter" – the presentation of a poster is required:
- When registering, please provide details about your poster presentation, including the title and an abstract. You can optionally upload finished poster, if you already have one.
- You may present either your PhD topic or one of your published or unpublished research projects. The poster must be related to AI. You have to bring the printed poster to the event; there is no poster service.
- For posters in the security-related field, there will be an additional post-discussion session with GCMC faculty members. Please indicate in the registration form whether your topic fits into this category.
Senior Researchers/Security Authority Participants:
- Please attend the poster presentation, where you can explore diverse research topics and engage in discussions with doctoral students. Senior researchers will be available to provide feedback on research content, potential applications, and presentation skills. This event offers a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, ask critical questions, and gain insights into current academic work.
