Stephan Stetter has been teaching International Politics and Conflict Studies at the Bundeswehr University Munich since 2008 and is a visiting professor at the University of Bologna in the academic year 2024/25. His research focuses on theories of international politics in global modernity, especially from a historical-sociological perspective; politics, conflicts and society in the Middle East, with a focus on Israel and Palestine; and the topic of EU foreign policy. His research is published by leading international specialist publishers and academic journals. After studying at the Ruprecht-Karls University in Heidelberg, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), he completed his doctorate at the LSE in 2004 with a thesis on EU foreign and domestic policy - including a six-month study visit to the European University Institute in Florence. From 2003 to 2006, he was a research assistant at the Department of Political Science and the Institute for World Society at Bielefeld University. From 2007 to 2008, Stephan Stetter was a deputy professor of political science at Bielefeld University, where he habilitated in January 2008. He has been a professor at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich since October 2008. From 2012-2018, he was one of the spokespersons of the International Relations Section of the German Political Science Association. From 2010-15, he was one of the managing editors of the Journal of International Relations (https://zib-online.org/), on whose advisory board he has served ever since. From 2014-2018 he was Dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. From 2020-2022 he was Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich. Stephan Stetter is the founding spokesperson (2024) of the Bavarian Science Alliance for Peace, Security and Conflict, on whose steering committee he has been deputy spokesperson since October 2024. Stephan Stetter is closely associated with social and political actors in the Middle East, Germany and the EU in the context of science transfer and is involved in many projects, especially with Israeli and Palestinian NGOs. He is regularly in demand in the German and international media as a commentator on peace and conflict in the Middle East.
